That's a question people have asked themselves for centuries. Here's my abbreviated answer.
My interest in astronomy began when I was a youngster, but was replaced by other interests along the way. Much later, as a married adult I received a used telescope as a gift. It was just a 60mm refractor on a wobbly mount but it renewed my appreciation for what is partially inscribed on the eave of the Stellafane clubhouse, "The heavens are declaring the glory of God; And the work of his hands the expanse is telling." Ps. 19:1. In the fifteen or so years since, I have owned dozens of telescopes and have purchased all of them (so far) on the used market. As a result of my ministerial activity, I have had assignments in Africa, Australia, Europe, India, Scandinavia, South America and the South Pacific. I have enjoyed both the sky and the people enormously in those lands and have had the opportunity to introduce quite a few to the night sky through small telescopes.
Because of my interest in used telescopes during this time, I undertook the research of prices and features of each popular telescope made during the last several decades by major manufacturers. As indicated on the "Intro" page, I decided to share the results of my research.
Just some of the telescopes I have had the privilege to own include:
